From Lawyer to Lawmaker

Me (front row, third from left) with PA House GOP Freshman Class

On November 2, 2010, I was elected State Representative of Pennsylvania's 199th District. On January 4, 2011, I am sworn-in to office (you can watch a live video feed of the ceremony at 12:00 pm EST) for my initial two-year term.

In order to perform the full time duties of my new position, I have reduced my law practice status at Irwin & McKnight, P.C. to "of counsel."

I don't expect to be blogging here much for the duration, but might occasionally stop in for a relevant post or two. Meanwhile, I'm tweeting @RepBloom and @StephenLBloom, and posting frequent updates at my official legislative facebook.

Godspeed to all who read this. I will covet your prayers as I transition from lawyer to lawmaker.

  2. Lawyers tend to specialize in specific branches of the law in order to hone their skills and expertise.
The first thing you should always remember is to look for a lawyer who has considerable skill and experience
in San Diego Criminal law. Others who are fortunate enough may already have a lawyer on retainer.

  3. The problem with the interview is that whatever he said is now part of the case against him. If his criminal defense
lawyers were planning to use outright denial that he was ever in any shower with any boys as part of their strategy,
that defense now goes out the window.

  22. Lawyer referral services are another source of information. There is a wide variation in the quality of lawyer referral services, however, even though they are required to be approved by the state bar association. Some lawyer referral services carefully screen attorneys and list only those attorneys with particular qualifications and a certain amount of past experience, while other services will list any attorney in good standing with the state bar who maintains liability insurance. Before you choose a lawyer referral service, ask what its qualifications are for including an attorney and how carefully lawyers are screened.

  24. Your attorney is there to protect your interests. He or she will review all the necessary documents before you sign them and negotiate changes on your behalf. There are different rules and procedures involved with buying and selling a condo, co-op, multi-family home, etc. and hopefully you will have selected an attorney who knows how to navigate your specific type of deal.

For an attorney to be any good in this business they have to do a lot of transactions and get a rhythm going. They have to know the protocols for working with the other side and they have to know what is worth fighting about, what is not worth fighting about, and which players can be pushed.

  29. A great way to test this is to call your prospective lawyer’s office and ask for him or her. If you get put right through or even worse sent to a voicemail, think twice about hiring this lawyer because it means they do not have effective systems in place for managing and responding to calls or answering your quick questions. Instead, what you want is for the person answering the phone or another team member to offer to help you and if he or she cannot then to schedule a call for you to talk with your lawyer at a future date and time when he or she will be ready to focus on your matter.

    1. A good family lawyer is to make sure that you get your fair share of the assets. When the marriage ends it will be necessary to divide the assets, this inevitably results in disagreements. In addition most cases will also require the payment of alimony to one of the parties. This makes coming up with a settlement even more problematic. The only way that you are going to make sure that you get your fair share is if you have a lawyer who is able to protect your rights and ensure that you get a reasonable judgment.

  35. http://www.ckfamilylawyers.com.au If legal issues arise that your real estate agent can't answer, you'll need an attorney's help. Although good agents know a lot about the negotiating and contracting part of the process, they can't make judgments on legal questions. For example, what if your prospective new home has an illegal in-law unit with an existing tenant whom you want to evict in order to rent the place to a friend? Only a lawyer can tell you with any certainty whether your plans are feasible. Or, if you're drafting any unusual language for the purchase contract, or are concerned about some language in your mortgage, you may want to have an attorney look the documents over.

  36. When looking for a lawyer, there are lots of places you can check. You can skim the Yellow Pages, ask your friends and colleagues, or you can search online. You can also check the newspaper to find updated information. Be sure to look for a real estate lawyer and not a general lawyer to ensure that he can deal with your real estate transactions.

  39. Hey,

    Nice Post!!

I’m really lucky I’ve only needed a lawyer once and I totally found him in the Yellow pages (or Google… essentially the same thing) and lucked out. When I was in grad school in Virginia three cops were killed within a month by speeding cars, so they made any tickets over 80 reckless driving an exorbitant fine and 90 days in jail. This awesome new law lasted about 6 months, but during it, I got a ticket for going like 95 (I know, entirely my own fault). But the lawyer, a kind judge and the only time I’ve ever bawled like a baby in public got him to drop it down to 79… and still a large fine. AND lawyer fees on top of it.

  40. In the United States, case law is sometimes called "common law," but it's not entirely accurate to use the two terms interchangeably. That's because "common law" can also refer to laws that originated in the United Kingdom and were passed down to or accepted by the 13 Colonies, and in some instances became the basis for laws adopted by new governments in the U.S.

Whenever somebody is making a decision or signing a document that potentially has legal consequences, that may have monetary consequences, they should consult lawyers,In other words, you're probably not super qualified to read and evaluate legal documents, and signing a legal document that you don't fully understand is not the best idea, especially when there's a lot of money on the line.

  50. One of the best reasons to hire a real estate agent is that the sellers are likely to use their own agent and you want to keep that agent from taking over the process. In fact, the seller's agent may pressure you to let him or her represent both of you, in a dual agency relationship that primarily benefits the seller.

  54. Lawyers also factor in how complicated your case is and the amount of time it will take. Even though the trial itself may only take half-a-day, researching the law, finding and interviewing witnesses, as well as preparing documents and arguments for the trial can take days, weeks or even longer. Sometimes unexpected developments take place that make your case even more complicated, which could result in higher fees.
